The hills, forests, coastline and sea of Argyll?s Secret Coast are rich in rare and wonderful wildlife. Kilfinan Community Forest, which lies behind Tighnabruaich, is run as a charity by local people who successfully purchased the 300 acres of forest in March 2010. It?s full of wildlife and home to badgers, stoats, weasels, pine martens and red squirrels. There are many woodland bird species with the occasional golden eagle spotted soaring overhead.
Walk around the coast and you?ll see a huge variety of seabirds, from diving gannets to noisy oystercatchers. On occasion shoals of whitebait have been observed being chased onto the beach by mackerel. You might also spot seals, porpoises, otters and even the occasional whale or basking shark. Seals and dolphins often follow the Tarbert/Portavadie ferry and there?s a seal colony around the coast near Crispie.
