Dunans Castle sits at the head of Glendaruel. The seat of the Clan Fletcher, the historic structure was shown on maps as far back as 1590. The original mansion- style house was converted into its present Franco-baronial form by Edinburgh-based architect Andrew Kerr and consisted of four main apartments and six bedrooms. The building passed out of Fletcher hands in 1997 and was run as an hotel until it was gutted by fire in January 2001, losing its main roof. The building was left as a ruin, but is now under new ownership and is being restored to its former glory.
The castle is set in 16 acres of ground. The heritage woodland garden is accessed over the unique listed Dunans Bridge designed by Thomas Telford. The ravine walk takes you through ancient woodland and past a waterfall, a marshland boardwalk through a wildflower meadow, an excellent collection of exotic rhododendron, azalea, ancient limes and big trees.
